In the second book of the Mandy Bell DVM Mystery Series, Mandy's life is action-packed from page one. First, her RV floods, waking her up. Then she finds herself in a sea of ailing cattle after a cattle truck has been struck by a train. Recovering from the drama of that disaster, Mandy then has to treat over ten dogs who all get overdosed with cattle pour-on. Trying to take a break from it all, Mandy takes Lyle, her constant companion and Border collie, to a friend's farm to frolic with sheep. Instead of a day off, Mandy discovers a dead body, which turns out to be the most mysterious death the Crestview police department has ever seen. Mandy's reluctance to stay in Crestview is pushed aside as she devotes herself to solving this potential murder.

I actually love the parts of her books that describe the veterinary activity but the stilted language, grammar, and really poor editing forced me to stop reading this book. I think that the author and her editors and reading partners should read this book out loud. Then they'd discover how stiff her writing is...don't think there was one contraction in the entire part that I read. I found myself changing the language as I read. Too bad because the character and the setting and the subject matter are so appealing. I'm sure she's a great doctor but please get a better editor. The character and her dog deserve better that what they've got right now.Product details

Pasture Postmortem Mandy Bell DVM Series Volume 2 Abby Deuel 9781502737908 Books Reviews
I throughly enjoyed the book . Both of them in the series and I hope there will be another book. I have noticed in some of the books I am reading, alot of misspelled words. It didn't take anything away from the story but someone needs to hire a new proof reader. Please let me know if another book in this series comes out.
This book is better than the first one. Dialogue a little more natural, story a lot more interesting. Still don't understand the motivation for the main character to solve murders, but glad she has figured out her living arrangements in such a good way. She continues to show poor judgement in where she goes alone! All in all, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Will definitely buy the next one.
This book was fairly well written. The plot was a bit twisty, which is how I like it. The characters and the protesters a little stilted at times. However, I couldn't put it down. I loved the bobcat rescue and rehab. Lyle chasing a basketball on a computer was a hoot. I want the puppy Anna Beatrice. When is the next one???
This author has joined my favorites list! Abby writes such a well written story and she has made me want to visit Creastview. I want to eat at the Inn so I can try Merv and Myrna's cooking, play fetch with Lyle, cuddle Anna, see the farm and go on a girl's night out with Mandy, Rhonda and Gillian. Book two in the series is life changing for Mandy and the town. I can't wait for book three.
"Pasture Postmortem" by Abby Deuel is the second book in the "Mandy Bell, DVM" Series. The main character is Mandy Bell, a veterinarian who inherits her friend's home and veterinary practice. Dr. Bell not only treats the animals in the town, but she also happens to solve some murder mysteries while she does it. The characters are likable, and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. Since Abby Deuel is a vet, she is able to use personal experience when describing an animal's illness and treatment. I found this enhanced the story and gave it authenticity. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, and if you enjoy murder mysteries, animals, and some insight into how vets work, you'll like it too.
This is a good series. The characters seem like good people. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the medical descriptions are too long and detailed, and some of the words are too "intellectual." For example, Mandy said, "I concur," instead of "I agree." Seriously, who talks like that? Lastly, the characters names are used way too much. Mandy went to the cupboard and got a bowl out. Then Mandy fed Lyle some kibble. We know it's Mandy. She and Lyle are the only ones in the room. I get distracted from the the actual story because of those issues.
I read the first in this series and thought nothing could compare to it. But this one is equally engrossing. The author has such a varied background in veterinary work herself that she can work her real life experiences in to the story. This story had a stock truck full of cattle being struck and Dr. Mandy Bell being called to help the wounded cows survive. At another time she went to a ranch and up-dated cattle on their vaccinations. All is described specifically and I believe accurately. We visited a piggery which was admirable in cleanliness and procedures. All this in addition to being the only veterinarian in the small animal hospital that Mandy Bell inherited. Her constant companion is a border collie named Lyle, a true item in the life of the author. Lyle is a compassionate, kind dog with just a few border collie quirks. I certainly hope this will be followed by book 3 and more.
