This is my wife's second copy. She loves the series, keeping them in a bookcase in our bedroom for easier reach, and when the old one was ruined by a roof leak she immediately wanted another one. That said, you should definitely read the first of the series, The Harrowing of Gwynedd, first since reading them out of order can be a little confusing. Better yet, start at the beginning with Camber of Culdi. This book starts with teen-age Javan becoming king after the death of his twin brother, who'd been controlled by the regents even past the age of majority. Javan has to battle against the regents just to be crowned in the first place and to keep fighting so they won't replace him with his younger, still minor, brother.

King Javan Year Heirs of Saint Chamber Katherine Kurtz 9780345384782 Books Reviews
KK's characters are finely formed and three dimensional, and the stories in this series are engaging and interesting from start to finish. KK has opened windows into an alternate world of power, political and magical, and the struggle to retain hope against oppressive and relentless forces of tyranny.
Katherine Kurtz does not disappoint in this continuation of her Deryni series. This continues the story of the ruling Haldanes of Gwynedd. The sons of the restored Haldane line inherit the throne each in turn and have to deal with trying to rule in truth when treacherous subjects want the power for themselves.
A great read, the books are tracking the Haldane line and the country of Gwynedd through several generations and over years of time. Makes it very enjoyable to fit the pieces together to see the " big picture" chronologically.
Javan is probably my favorite character in the early books. Loved this particular book.
I am in a love/hate relationship with this book. The book was so well written you quickly become attached to the characters and fall in love with them. You find a continuation of events from previous novels accompanied by new developments. This of course leaves you wanting more. It is for all of these reasons that I loved the book.
I hate this book for only one reason, and it directly correspondes with my fast growing love for the characters and how and when King Javan's Year comes to an end. A must read, but be prepared for tears.
Item was delivered on time and was as described. This was an addition to my Deryni collection.
As the title is spoiler, you are ready know the villains are going to win most of the rounds. While Javan tries his best to get the better of the former regents, they conspire to stop him from gaining true power. The writing does a lot of justice to Javan’s character. However, the villains do not get much character development. But I did want to kill some of the bad guys myself.
As much as I like the series, I had a difficult time finishing this installment. Perhaps that was the author's intention -- to mirror the difficult times experienced by the main character. Dark and brooding, filled with deceit and violence, perhaps signalling the transition to the next entry, The Bastard Prince. Glad to finish and now on to the next.
